Haku Blaisdell

I was born and raised on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi, and I am now in the Chicagoland area as a recent graduate of Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy. As a student at Northwestern, I was able to further explore my interests in Indigenous rights, history, education equity, and the environment through various policy classes and internships. I am particularly interested in the ways that race, public learning, and public policy intersect and how we can find equitable, community-based solutions to interconnected social issues.

I have a strong qualitative research background and experience in teaching, designing research projects, and working with different stakeholder communities. I pride myself in being a lifelong learner, and I am eager to continue to grow my skillset in a new and exciting opportunity that combines my interests.

Digital Divide Zine

This zine aims to highlight the pressing issue of the digital divide in Native communities. It adds to the long-existing work of community members and policy makers around this issue, uplifts the work of Native communities in addressing this issue, emphasizes how the digital divide in Native communities has been exacerbated by COVID-19, highlights the historical and systemic nature of this issue, and emphasizes that this issue is a matter of survival. This zine was also created for my Race & Public Policy class with Professor Sally Nuamah.

Connect & Care: Connecting You To A World Of Nonprofits

Philanthropy is getting a makeover thanks to Connect & Care, an app launched in June 2017 by brothers Matt Zients and Josh Zients, with the help of Oakland software developer Marquavious Draggon. This digital humanitarian hub aims to connect users to a world of nonprofits, and it’s the first nonprofit donation app to come out of Northwestern’s startup center, The Garage.

Connect & Care is a non-profit mobile app that allows users to browse, learn about, and donate to 20 designated nonprofits fr

Blaisdell: Prioritize higher education funding this midterm election

It’s hard to talk about college without mentioning the elephant in the room — paying for tuition.

I’m a full-time student whose education depends on financial aid and the wages from my part-time job. Frankly, I’m one of the lucky ones — many must work full-time jobs, while others are forced to put their education on hold entirely. About 40 percent of undergraduates work over 30 hours a week, while 25 percent of students enrolled in college full-time simultaneously work full-time jobs. Additiona

Work in Progress: Coming Fall 2021

I'm currently working on a zine and ArcGIS Storymap website on Indigenous Interventions into the Field Museum of Natural History. In collaboration with Debra Yepa-Pappan and Meranda Roberts at the Field Museum, this work will highlight the ways in which Indigenous people challenge and refigure the harmful and colonial legacies of museums. The zine and website will include interviews with Indigenous artists, community members, and scholars about their work.
